Musician, John Currey
Ryanstrati met percussionist John Currey at a master class for Lar Lobovitch. Soon thereafter he accompanied her modern dance classes at the Kansas City Ballet School's Summer Intensive and they formed an artistic architectural partnership.
This led to collaborative projects in which new dance and music compositions were constructed, and a foundation for new performances, master classes and workshops was built.
Currey holds a Master's degree in Percussion Performance from the Conservatory of Music and Dance at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. In addition to his directing duties with the Caribbean Heart Steel Pan Band, Echoes of Africa Drum Ensemble, Marimba Sol de Chiapas Mexican Marimba Group, and as Facilitator for the WWM Drum Circles. Currey was an Original Cast Member for KC Union Station’s Sticks of Thunder, is Percussionist for the Kansas City Brassworks, the Flamenco dance and music ensemble: Flamenco de los Barrios, is a member of the Tri-Percussion group, he plays drums/percussion for the Steve Gray Band featuring Shannon Lipps on vocals, and, in Broken String -- a guitar and percussion trio putting a delightfully fresh twist on the fusion of Latin Jazz, Flamenco, the Pat Metheny songbook, and more.
Currey is a Modern Dance Accompanist with nearly 20 years of accompaniment experience. His hand drumming has been featured with the Kansas City Friends of Alvin Ailey's outreach programs and AileyCamps, the Kansas City Ballet School Summer Intensives, the Westport Ballet, and in numerous Modern Dance Master Classes, including for members of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and the Lar Lubovitch Dance Company, with dance greats David Parsons, Leni Wylliams, Denise Jefferson, and others.
Currey's dance accompanying earned him a commission to co-write music for the Wylliams/Henry Dance Company, and, his upcoming CD release: Grooves for Modern Dance, volume 1 is an exciting collection of music to keep Modern / Contemporary Dance classes moving! John accompanies Modern Classes at the UMKC Conservatory of Music and Dance and for the Kansas City Ballet School.
